Yup. I'm the only one.

Okay. I used to think that there were more gay men on campus. Especially in the HFAC. Apparently, I was way wrong! All the guys who I thought were gay are not. Maybe my gaydar is broken.

Or, they could be hiding it for fear of getting kicked out of BYU. Or, I could simply be one of the very very very few gay guys in the HFAC. I don't know if I believe it...but...I swear it's true.

I mean, all the guys who I thought were gay all have girlfriends. What? I mean....gosh...I feel like I am slowly reverting back to my old way of thinking when I was in High School and feeling so alone.

Maybe I should just wear a bright pink shirt that says, "If you're gay, hug me!" Then...then...I would know for sure.

Ideas?

  1. ...or maybe this means you aren't gay yourself...and this is all a figment of your imagination. ;)

  2. In light of everything happening on campus it is very likely that people are enter a "self preservation" mode.

  4. I second Ann-Michelle's comment. They're Thursdays at 7 in the Talmage building. I'd tell you the room, but I don't know. I just wander in.

As one with a very well-tuned gaydar, I will tell you that BYU is crawling with gay men. I knew a lot of them while I was there. I don't see any reason why there would be less now.

The difficulty is that so many BYU men dress very gay. My partner and I live in SLC now and it's *so* much easier to tell the gays from the straights here. But if you're a people-watcher, the gay/straight camouflage won't fool you for long.

Besides, having a girlfriend doesn't mean you're not gay. I had two while at BYU. Think about it, being married doesn't mean you're not gay. Plenty of your readers can tell you that.

  7. Ha ha ha, PLEASE wear that shirt. I would be fascinated to hear how that would go over (as long as nothing bad came of it, of course).

  8. There were lots when I was in the HFAC. But then again, the witch hunt was done on us, so we have either left, gotten kicked out, or hide. Sigh.

BYU interferes with gaydar. Mormon culture feminizes men in general, and the wholesome milk commercial vibe throws you off. When my non-Mormon gay roommate visited campus years ago I had to warn him to adjust his gaydar to tune out 90% of the false pings. (But I also assured him there are lots of gay boys at the Y too....)

  10. I think that BYU has a secret gaydar interference machine. That or it's really good at getting gay men to date and marry anyway. Unfortunately, that doesn't mean that they become straight...So don't feel bad. I think that I was pretty good at hiding my gay light under a bushel because I was afraid...
