Wow, Andy, you MUST enter the Mormon Video contest. You could even do it with this film if you add a plot twist to include a gospel message. The entry deadline is January 31, so you could, you should, you must do it. I will help. Other Moho's will help. You need money, labor we'll give it, we'll find it. YOU ARE THE MAN!
About the film as it is: perfect for Halloween. Where did you get the AP audio? How did you do the tree shot where the camera slowly lowers down from the top of a tree? How did you happen to shoot the exteriors during a rain storm? Do you have access to the home or homes where the interiors were shot? How long did it take you to shoot and edit this little gem?
Nice tip of the hat to Kathy Bates in the 1990 academy awarding winning Misery!
Now that you mention it, I just may do that. I don't know if I will film a "documentary" style short, or if I will film a fiction piece. Maybe I should ask the MoHo world in a new blog post.
(1) I got the AP Audio news clips from YouTube. I played the video, and captured the audio using Audacity.
(2) Now, that would reveal a secret of a low-budget filmmaker! Actually, all I did was extend my tripod all the way out, securely attached the camera, then held it high in the trees and lowered it down. Pretty simple :)
(3) When I was outside shooting the exterior scenes, I had my camera in one hand and an umbrella in the other. When I captured the shot of the lines in the road, I used a cardboard box shaped like a camera to protect it from the rain--all the while I was hanging out of the backseat of a car.
(4) Yes. I have access to that home. My friend Clarise lives there.
(5) It took us about 6 hours to shoot and roughly about 26 hours to edit.
Ned, thanks for the nice comments. I love filmmaking, and to have someone ask so many questions makes me feel really good inside.
Andy, I think your love of filmmaking definitely shows. I'm glad you're thinking about the contest. I've had several ideas, but I really like your documentary idea. Maybe along the lines of Michael Wiltbank's gays and their supporters photos, but this time with people talking and maybe even some supportive touching? Would that be too radical? You could also put out a request an compile videos from Mormons from all over the world and put them together with the original song that Sean Haley is composing. For any local shooting what would it cost to rent the camera you want? Any other expenses you'd like to solicit funds to help with? -Ned
p.s. if you did the walk with me talk with me idea and you could get a huge bunch of people together at UVSC as extras, you could do some kind of a scene that starts with two people and then ends up being a huge group. You could have graphics or a voice over giving that statistic on my last blog about 138,248 gay or SGA Mormons worldwide based on 1% of 13,824,854 members of record.
Or, if you think you could get permission, you could film Lavell Edwards Stadium empty or show stills or stock footage with it full of fans.
CREEPY! :) The best kind, of course. I really like it!

Just some ideas.
oops, I mean UVU. Sorry UVU fans and students. ;(
ReplyDeleteI'm envious! A friend of mine and I always brainstormed short scary movie scripts. It's awesome to see someone actually do it! Bravo!
ReplyDeleteGood job. That was great. :-)
